Punjab Roadways Employees Plan Protest, to Gherao CM’s Residence on July 10

Chandigarh, June 18: The Punjab Roadways employees are gearing up for a major protest against the state government, accusing it of failing to fulfill promises related to wages and job security. The employees have announced a three-day strike from July 9 to 11, with a massive demonstration planned outside the Chief Minister’s residence on July 10.

According to union leaders, including State President Resham Singh and Secretary Shamsher Singh Dhillon, the protest will also include a sit-in at the Chandigarh Head Office. The employees claim that repeated assurances by the government remain unfulfilled, causing ongoing hardship—especially due to delays in monthly salary payments.

Key demands of the protesting employees include regularization of contract workers, elimination of the contractual hiring system, and action against widespread corruption within the department. The unions have alleged that recruitment is being carried out without valid agreements and that bribes exceeding ₹1 lakh are being taken in exchange for job placements. They claim to have submitted evidence in the form of affidavits, audio, and video recordings, but accuse the government of ignoring all demands.

The employee unions also raised serious allegations about the misuse of the Kilometer Scheme, under which buses are allegedly being used to siphon off crores of rupees. They have accused departmental officials of encouraging bribery, preparing false reports, and being complicit in various ongoing scams within the department.

Union leaders reiterated that their agitation will continue until all their demands are met. “We are not just fighting for our salaries or permanent jobs, but for transparency and justice in the entire transport system,” they said.

As the strike dates draw closer, the state is likely to witness disruptions in public transport, with tensions rising between the employees and the administration.
